In addition to the following information, the most fundamental question we often receive is “What is Venturing?” To answer that question in official terms, Venturing is a division of the Boy Scouts of America for young adults, both men and women, ages 14- 21. The purpose of the Venturing program is to provide positive experiences to help youth mature and to prepare them to become responsible adults. Beyond that, the possibilities are endless.
The real definition of Venturing, as the youth who are part of the program see it, is up to interpretation. Venturing Crews, which are the Venturing equivalent of Boy Scout Troops, may choose to specialize in any area they choose - whether it be a medical specialization, or an outdoor specialization, a climbing specialization, or even a medieval battle reenactment specialization. Those crews will then design a program that fits their specialization and is suitable for them. Many crews choose to not specialize at all, and do whatever new and exciting things they feel like doing.
Venturing, like Boy Scouting, also has a recognition/ advancement system and opportunities for leadership training – both of which are ultimately optional. A Venturer does whatever it is he or she wants to do; therefore, it is, in simplest terms, a youth- run program.
For more information about starting a Venturing Crew or joining an existing one, you can follow the “Venturing Units” link below, or get in touch with us by following the “Contact Us” link, also found below. Thanks, and we hope to hear from you soon!
The Venturing Officers’ Association of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Council serves the purpose of running the Venturing program in the council. Run exclusively by youth, the meetings act as a forum for the youth officers of all the crews in the council to gather, discuss the program, plan for events, and receive training and other information to aid them in their home crews.
The VOA is responsible for running/ promoting 5 events every year: Venturing Week at Goose Pond Scout Reservation, a summer camp program geared towards Venturers; the Insomniacs Revenge, a weekend long event with 36 hours of program for Venturers from all over the area; the Holiday Lock- In, an all night gathering of Venturers in the council during the holiday season in the spirit of fellowship; the Winter Olympics, a daylong gathering of Venturers in the winter which includes athletic competitions and opportunities to earn requirements for the Sports Bronze Award; and the Venturing Rendezvous, the area conclave held in mid May. The VOA also plans and conducts a training every year to teach Venturers how to conduct an ILSC on the crew level.
The VOA is also responsible to providing service to the council camps. In addition to aiding with events held at the camps such as Harvest Fest, the VOA also plans and carries out service projects with the goal of providing significant improvements to the camps and the programs they run.
So, if you are a crew officer interested in having a say in how your program is run, you can get in touch with us on the Contact Us page to find out how to join. See you soon!
Council Vice President of Administration: Tyler Sepcoski
Hey guys! My name is Tyler Sepcoski and I’m honored to serve as you and the rest of those in the Northeastern Pennsylvania Council as the Vice President of Administration.
In addition to being the VOA Vice President of Administration, I’m also President of Crew 2025, and have been for two years now. I’m also a Brotherhood member of Order of the Arrow Lodge 191, an Eagle Scout from Troop 316, and a Camp Acahela staff member for the last three years. I’ve been in Venturing for three years now and I’ve been in Scouting for 11 years and I don’t plan on leaving it. Venturing has honestly given me some of my best memories and I know it still has many more just waiting in store!
Outside of Scouting, I’m a Senior at Triboro Christian Academy, college student at Luzerne Community College, a member of the National Honor Society and a captain of my high school’s soccer team. After high school I plan on going to Penn State for Administration of Justice.
When I’m not working on school work, I’m usually planning for my next Scouting event, or at least looking forward to it! Venturing has let me experience many new things, meet new people, and has changed my life exponentially, especially considering I’ve only been in the program for three years. As the Vice President of Administration I hope to help the Venturing program grow so that the youth of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Council can have all the experiences I’ve had because of it. Thank you, and I hope to see you at the next Venturing event!
